How to Fix a Noisy Garage Door

It is never easy, if at all possible, getting used to the unpleasant noise produced by a broken garage door. What is more is that a noisy door will get your neighbors talking about you and not in a good light. The good news is that there are a couple of things you can do to silence the noisy door. You just need to make time for regular maintenance and fix the broken parts quickly.

Below are a few suggestions that will help you get rid of the noisy garage door permanently:

Tighten the nuts and bolts

One of the main reasons why garage doors make a lot of noise when being opened and closed is because of loose nuts and bolts. After some time, the bolts and nuts get loose. This is often caused by the daily vibrations resulting from the door being opened and closed. Your first step should, therefore, be the inspection of the nuts and bolts. Use a socket set or wrench and check all the nuts and bolts. Retightening them may just be all you need to get rid of the noise.

Replace worn rollers

If tightening the nuts and bolts does not get rid of the problem, you should check the rollers. To inspect them, you need to open and shut the door while inspecting the rollers. Some of the rollers are nylon and others are metal. If they are worn out, they will become squeaky. If you find that the rollers are worn, you should probably consider getting them replaced. However, if they are in good condition, consider lubricating them. Proper lubrication can solve the noise problem.

When replacing the worn rollers, it is recommended to opt for the nylon rollers. These are quitter. You should also contact the local garage door specialist to help with the replacements. Refrain from doing the job yourself.

Springs

The garage door springs may also be the cause of the noise. There are two types of springs on the door; the extension springs located on the upper tracks on the 2 sides of the door and the torsion springs located above the closed door. It is the torsion springs you should be more careful with. These springs are under significant tension. If either of the springs is broken, you should have it replaced immediately by a specialist. If the springs are making a small clanging sound or squeaking, you should use spray metal lubricant on them. Motor oil will also work but in small quantities.

Hinge replacement

The hinges get worn. The rollers produce noise when being operated. Inspect the hinges and make sure they are not damaged. You should also lubricate the parts.

Opener

The garage door opener may also be a culprit when dealing with a noisy door. Make sure it is not loose and lubricate it. Don’t use grease or lubricant on a belt drive.

Amplified noise

If the garage is constructed with concrete, the slight noise from the door may be amplified. Insulating the supports that hold the horizontal tracks using rubber strops will deaden the noise.

You don’t have to inspect the door yourself. You can hire a garage door specialist to check out the noise problem for you.
